Top Photo: Hearing news over the Christmas holidays that I had a surveillance file with the Czechoslovak StB had me scrambling to read accounts of others who’ve found themselves suddenly in the same situation. Katherine Verdery’s book on her experiences in Romania in the 1970s and ’80s was helpful to me in learning some of the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of surveillance in the former Eastern bloc and in coping with the range of contradictory emotions that learning about and reading the files elicited.
