Nord-ost

In 2002, Chechen rebels occupied a Moscow theater during a performance of the musical, ‘Nord-Ost’ and took some 900 theater-goers hostages. It was an early test of the Putin government and one the Kremlin ultimately failed. Hundreds died when Russian security forces pumped the theater with poison gas in an effort to disable the hostage-takers. Photo credit: NTV.
