kursk

One of the first big challenges for the Putin-led Kremlin was an accidental explosion in August 2000 onboard the nuclear-powered submarine, Kursk, in the Barents Sea. The blast and subsequent sinking killed all 118 crewmen. Incredibly, the Russian Navy didn’t know the sub had sunk for more than six hours. Photo wikimedia.org.
